Devario pathirana
Also known as: Pathirana Devario, Sri Lanka Devario
Origin: Sri Lanka
Devario pathirana is an uncommon and highly attractive devario found only in the streams and rivers of Sri Lanka's wet zone, making it a true endemic species of conservation significance. It displays a deeper body profile than most devarios, with vivid iridescent blue and yellow-gold banding that is especially brilliant in dominant males during courtship and territorial display.
In the aquarium it requires clean, well-oxygenated water and a spacious tank to express its natural schooling behaviour. A group of six to eight fish will reward the keeper with dynamic, fast-paced swimming and regular display interactions between males. Its slightly elevated care requirements — particularly its preference for very clean water — place it in the intermediate category.
Given its endemic status and restricted range in Sri Lanka, Devario pathirana should ideally be sourced from responsible captive-breeding programs to reduce pressure on wild populations.
Water: Temperature 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard; high water quality paramount — sensitive to nitrate accumulation. Tank: Minimum 80 L with strong water movement; well-planted but with clear midwater swimming lanes; sand or fine gravel substrate. Feeding: Micro-pellets, flake, and frozen foods; live daphnia and baby brine shrimp promote breeding condition and colouration. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; infrequently bred in captivity; conditioning on live foods and cool water changes may stimulate spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful schooling fish; best with other medium cyprinids, smaller barbs, or peaceful loaches; avoid aggressive or nippy tankmates.
