Nothobranchius patrizii
Also known as: Patrizi's Nothobranch, Patrizi's Killifish
Origin: Kenya, Somalia
Nothobranchius patrizii inhabits seasonal pools along the coasts of Kenya and Somalia that dry out completely each year, requiring the fish to mature and spawn rapidly before their habitat disappears. Eggs are deposited in substrate and survive the dry season in diapause. Males are spectacular show fish for small dedicated aquaria.
Water: 20–25°C, pH 6.0–7.5, moderately hard; slightly cooler temperatures extend lifespan. Tank: 40L minimum per pair, peat substrate or spawning mops for egg deposition. Feeding: Carnivore — live/frozen cyclops, daphnia, artemia; accepts micro-pellets. Behaviour: Males aggressive toward each other; keep one male per tank. Compatibility: Best kept as species or with fast-moving dither fish.
