Apistogramma paucisquamis
Origin: Brazil (upper Rio Negro)
Apistogramma paucisquamis is an uncommon species from the upper Rio Negro drainage in Brazil, notable for its reduced lateral-line scale count and distinctive dark suborbital facial stripes. Males develop impressive lyre-tail extensions and display rich orange flanks when in breeding condition, creating a stunning display against the dark tannin-stained water. This species requires pristine, very soft, blackwater conditions to truly thrive and show its best colors.
Maintain extreme blackwater conditions using RO water with Indian almond leaves or peat. Provide leaf litter, driftwood caves, and subdued lighting. Feed live and frozen micro-foods. Keep as a pair or harem. This species is sensitive to water quality degradation—frequent small water changes are essential.
