Macrognathus siamensis
Also known as: Peacock Spiny Eel, Siamese Spiny Eel, Lesser Spiny Eel
Origin: Southeast Asia
Macrognathus siamensis is a manageable and relatively hardy spiny eel from the rivers and floodplains of Southeast Asia. It is much more tolerant of imperfect conditions than its larger relatives and will coexist with a range of peaceful medium-sized fish, provided no tankmates are small enough to be consumed. Its eyespots are thought to deter predators by mimicking a larger animal's eye.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard. Tank: Minimum 120L, fine sand or fine gravel substrate for burrowing, dense planting, tight lid. Feeding: Carnivore; live and frozen bloodworm, Tubifex, small earthworms, daphnia. Behaviour: Peaceful but will eat small fish and shrimp; nocturnal and secretive. Compatibility: Medium-large tetras, peaceful cichlids, medium catfish; avoid shrimp and small nano fish.
