Danio albolineatus
Also known as: Pearl Danio, Pearlescent Danio
Origin: Southeast Asia, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos
Danio albolineatus, the Pearl Danio, is one of the most enduringly popular aquarium danios and has been kept since the early days of the hobby. Its flanks shimmer with an iridescent blue-green and pearl sheen, complemented by a faint pink or golden lateral stripe in males. Native to hill streams and rivers across Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and surrounding regions, it is a robust and adaptable fish tolerant of a wide range of water parameters. It is an active, surface-to-midwater schooler that should be kept in groups of at least six. The Pearl Danio breeds readily in the aquarium, scattering eggs among fine-leaved plants or over a spawning mop. It accepts virtually any appropriately sized food. An ideal choice for beginner and experienced aquarists alike.
Water: Temperature 18–25 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 5–15; tolerates a broad range of conditions. Tank: 60 L minimum; planted margins with open central swimming area; secure lid essential as danios jump. Feeding: Flake, micro-pellet; supplement with frozen daphnia, cyclops, and baby brine shrimp for colour and conditioning. Breeding: Prolific egg-scatterer; use a spawning mop or fine plants; remove adults after spawning to protect eggs. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; mix freely with tetras, rasboras, small livebearers, and peaceful catfish.
