Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Pearl Discus, Pearlescent Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Southeast Asian hatcheries)
The Pearl Discus is a refined domestic strain occupying the pale, luminous end of the discus colour spectrum. Its cream-white to pale champagne base carries a subtle iridescent sheen — soft silver and gold undertones visible when light strikes the body at oblique angles — giving it the quality of a fine baroque pearl.
Pearl Discus are among the most discerning when it comes to water quality. The pale, semi-reflective body surface shows stress bars, disease, and nutritional deficiency with unusual clarity. This makes husbandry both more demanding and more transparent — any deviation from optimal conditions is immediately visible.
A group of Pearl Discus in a minimalist aquarium with dark substrate, soft diffuse lighting, and a single species of slow-moving companion fish creates an atmosphere of quiet luxury that is the antithesis of a typical busy community tank.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-7.0, very soft (1-6 dGH), KH 0-3; near-pristine conditions; near-zero nitrates. Tank: Minimum 250 L, dark substrate, diffuse soft lighting, minimal decor to keep focus on the fish. Feeding: White-flesh protein sources — mysis, white mosquito larvae, lightly coloured pellets; avoid heavy colourants. Breeding: Open spawner; pearl colouration partially dominant; selective pairing to maintain pale phenotype. Compatibility: Species-only discus tank or with very gentle, slow-moving non-competitive companions.
