Trichopodus leerii
Also known as: Pearl Gourami, Lace Gourami, Mosaic Gourami
Origin: Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, Sumatra, Borneo — peat swamps and blackwater rivers

Trichopodus leerii is native to the peat swamp forests, blackwater rivers, and slow-moving lowland rivers of peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, Sumatra, and Borneo, where it inhabits densely vegetated, soft, acidic, tannin-rich waters. It belongs to the osphronemid gourami family, sharing the characteristic labyrinth organ for atmospheric air breathing.
The coloration is extraordinary: a warm reddish-brown to orange-tan base body is covered with a dense pattern of small pearlescent white or silver dots that continue across the fins and tail, creating a mosaic or lace-like appearance. Males develop a vivid brick-red to orange-red coloration on the throat, breast, and ventral surface during breeding condition — one of the most impressive color displays of any gourami species. Females lack the red breast but retain the full pearlescent dot pattern.
Males also develop slightly more elaborate fins with pointed dorsal and ventral fin extensions in mature specimens. Males build bubble nests among floating plants and surface vegetation, with the male taking primary responsibility for nest construction and egg guarding.
Pearl Gouramis are considered among the hardiest and most disease-resistant gourami species — far less susceptible to the Dwarf Gourami Iridovirus that affects T. lalius — making them an excellent choice for beginning gourami keepers.
Pearl Gouramis prefer soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic water: pH 6.0–7.5, hardness 3–12 dGH, and temperatures 24–28°C. They are adaptable and moderately forgiving of water condition variations, though soft, slightly acidic water produces the most vivid coloration and breeding condition.
A minimum 120-liter aquarium suits a pair or small group. Provide floating plants (Salvinia, Frogbit) for bubble nest construction and security, dense stem plant cover, driftwood, and gentle current — they prefer still to gently flowing water. Dim surface lighting suits their preference for shaded surface habitat.
Feed a varied diet: quality flake food, gourmand pellets, daphnia, baby brine shrimp, cyclops, and small bloodworms. Pearl Gouramis are omnivores that readily accept a wide range of foods and are particularly enthusiastic about small live and frozen foods.
Pearl Gouramis are peaceful toward all species they cannot swallow. Compatible with most community fish: medium tetras, rasboras, corydoras, peaceful catfish, livebearers, and small cichlids. Males may occasionally be assertive toward each other — provide adequate space for multiple males. Avoid nippy species that may target their long pelvic fins.
Regular water changes of 25–30% weekly maintain water quality. Their hardiness and peaceful temperament make them one of the most recommended larger gourami species for community aquariums.
