Melanochromis joanjohnsonae
Also known as: Pearl of Likoma, Joanjohnsonae Mbuna
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
Melanochromis joanjohnsonae, the Pearl of Likoma, is a small and relatively rarely offered mbuna endemic to Likoma Island. It displays a beautiful pearlescent white to pale blue colouration with a faint mid-lateral stripe. It is somewhat less aggressive than other Melanochromis species and has a refined appearance that stands out in a well-planned mbuna aquarium.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.5-8.5, hard alkaline; consistent water quality important. Tank: 150L minimum with rock cave structures for retreat. Feeding: Algae and small invertebrates; spirulina flakes, small cichlid pellets. Behaviour: Somewhat less aggressive than other Melanochromis; still territorial at spawning. Compatibility: Can be mixed with Electric Yellows and other mild mbuna.
