Pterophyllum scalare var.
Also known as: Pearlscale Angelfish, Pearl Angelfish, Pearlscale Angel
Origin: Captive bred (originally Amazon basin, South America)
The Pearlscale Angelfish carries a recessive mutation affecting scale structure: each scale develops a raised, dome-like centre that catches and refracts light differently from a flat scale, creating a lustrous, three-dimensional 'pearled' surface texture visible across the entire body. The effect is most spectacular under directional aquarium lighting.
Pearlscale can be combined with various colour morphs (silver, koi, marble, etc.) to produce compound phenotypes. The pearlscale gene can also produce slight body shape differences in some individuals — slight body curve or scale irregularity — which does not affect health but is a cosmetic consideration for show fish.
Pearlscale angels are fully hardy but benefit from excellent water quality, as the unusual scale structure can be slightly more susceptible to bacterial infections if conditions deteriorate. Otherwise, care is identical to standard angelfish.
Water: Temperature 24–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, GH 2–12, KH 1–6; pristine water quality is especially important for this strain. Tank: 150 L tall aquarium; directional overhead lighting maximises the pearl-like light reflection from the scales. Feeding: Varied diet of cichlid pellets, frozen brine shrimp, bloodworm, and vegetable flake; feed 2–3 times daily. Breeding: Pearlscale is recessive; pair two pearlscale fish to produce 100% pearlscale offspring. Compatibility: Suitable with peaceful medium-bodied community fish; water quality maintenance is non-negotiable.
