Carassius auratus
Also known as: Pearlscale Goldfish, Golf Ball Goldfish, Chinshurin
Origin: China
The Pearlscale Goldfish owes its appearance to thickened, calcified scales with white dome-shaped centers that resemble pearls. Its extremely round body means it can be prone to buoyancy issues if overfed or fed floating foods. Despite its unusual shape, it is a reasonably hardy fancy goldfish with a charming, waddling swimming style.
Water: 10–22°C, pH 6.5–7.5, clean and well-oxygenated. Tank: minimum 120 L, avoid strong current that disrupts its buoyancy. Feeding: sinking pellets and peas exclusively — floating food can cause swim bladder issues. Behaviour: comical, waddling swimmer; one of the most endearing fancy goldfish to observe. Compatibility: other round-bodied fancy goldfish such as oranda, ranchu, or lionhead.
