Apistogramma pedunculata
Also known as: Peduncle Apisto, Pedunculata Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: Peru
Apistogramma pedunculata is a modestly sized Peruvian species most easily identified by the distinctively elongated dark blotch at the caudal peduncle — a marking that is proportionally larger and more prominent than in closely related species, providing an immediate identification feature even at a distance.
The species is native to soft, acidic Amazonian streams and inhabits areas with dense aquatic vegetation and a substrate of leaf litter and fine sand. In the aquarium it is an alert, active fish that quickly learns feeding routines and will position itself at the front of the tank when its keeper approaches.
A. pedunculata is an intermediate-level species that rewards careful attention to water chemistry with consistent good health, vivid coloration, and regular spawning behavior.
Water: Soft, acidic — pH 5.0–6.5, temperature 25–28°C. Tank: 60 L minimum with sand substrate, caves, and plant coverage. Feeding: Varied live/frozen invertebrates and micro-pellets. Breeding: Cave spawner; female broods exclusively; moderate difficulty. Compatibility: Small peaceful tetras and pencilfish; avoid overly active companions.
