Pelvicachromis drachenfelsi
Also known as: Drachenfels Krib, Drachenfels Kribensis, Cross River Krib
Origin: Cameroon (Cross River system)
Pelvicachromis drachenfelsi was formally described from tributaries of the Cross River system in Cameroon. It is a well-patterned species featuring a series of dark spots and vertical bars on the flanks, a boldly marked dorsal fin, and female nuptial colouration rivalling the more commonly kept P. taeniatus forms. The species' complex patterning and scientific novelty make it particularly attractive to krib enthusiasts.
As with all Pelvicachromis, P. drachenfelsi is an obligate cave-spawner forming tight pair bonds. The female guards the clutch inside the cave while the male actively defends the surrounding territory. Fry are free-swimming within a week of hatching and can be raised on micro-foods and baby brine shrimp.
Soft, slightly acidic water matching the Cross River forest streams is essential — pH 5.5–7.0, low to moderate hardness, and temperatures of 24–27°C. A planted aquarium with plenty of caves and leaf litter provides the ideal environment.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft (GH 2–10, KH 1–5). Tank: 80 L minimum with multiple cave options, leaf litter, bogwood, and dense planting. Feeding: Micro pellets, quality flake, and regular frozen or live brine shrimp, bloodworm, and daphnia. Breeding: Cave-spawner; provide multiple cave options to allow pair to select preferred site. Compatibility: Best with peaceful schooling dither fish such as small tetras or rasboras; keep one pair per tank.
