Pelvicachromis kribensis var. 'Super Red'
Also known as: Super Red Krib, Super Red Kribensis
Origin: Captive-bred (West Africa origin)
The Super Red Kribensis is a captive line in which generations of selective breeding have intensified the red-to-scarlet belly colouration far beyond that of wild P. kribensis, with the colour extending further onto the flanks and into the dorsal region in females. Males also show increased red-orange in the unpaired fins, making this one of the most vibrantly coloured krib strains commercially available.
Despite the enhanced colour, Super Reds are every bit as hardy and easy to keep as standard Kribensis. They are excellent cave-spawners and devoted parents, and the contrast between the male's metallic-green flanks and the female's scarlet belly creates a stunning display in a planted tank.
A varied diet rich in carotenoids — including frozen brine shrimp, colour-enhancing pellets, and spirulina — will maintain the depth and saturation of the red pigmentation through adulthood.
Water: 24–26°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 2–15, KH 1–10). Tank: 80 L; dense planting, caves, and a dark substrate to make red colouration pop. Feeding: Carotenoid-rich diet — colour pellets, spirulina flake, frozen brine shrimp, and bloodworm. Breeding: Typical cave-spawner; pairs are reliable breeders even in community settings if caves are provided. Compatibility: Excellent community cichlid; pairs well with tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, and livebearers.
