Pelvicachromis kribensis var. 'Yellow'
Also known as: Yellow Krib, Yellow Kribensis, Golden Krib
Origin: Captive-bred (West Africa origin)
The Yellow Kribensis is a captive-selected strain of Pelvicachromis kribensis in which selective breeding has shifted the base body colour from the typical olive-brown to a warm golden-yellow, while the characteristic violet-to-pink female belly patch is fully retained. The result is a visually striking fish with strong contrast between the bright body and vivid ventral colouration.
Care and behaviour are identical to the wild-type krib — cave-spawning, strong pair bonds, and attentive parental care make this an excellent choice for hobbyists who want a cichlid with personality in a community tank. Yellow Kribensis thrive in planted aquariums where the body colour contrasts beautifully against green vegetation.
They are hardy and forgiving of a wide pH range, making them accessible to beginners, while still providing the engaging breeding behaviour that makes the krib group so popular. Feed a varied diet to maintain the depth of yellow pigmentation.
Water: 24–26°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 2–15, KH 1–10). Tank: 80 L minimum; dense planting, caves, and a dark substrate enhance yellow colouration. Feeding: Quality flake, micro pellets, spirulina-enriched food, and frozen brine shrimp to maintain vivid colour. Breeding: Cave-spawner; standard krib breeding behaviour — provide a coconut cave or clay pot. Compatibility: Excellent community fish with tetras, rasboras, livebearers, and peaceful bottom-dwellers.
