Pelvicachromis signatus

Pelvicachromis signatus is a diminutive Nigerian krib, one of the smallest members of the genus at just 5–6 cm. It was originally described from the Niger Delta area and is characterised by a distinctive spotted pattern on the caudal peduncle, giving rise to its specific name. Females develop a deep violet-magenta belly patch relative to their small body size, making them stand out in a planted setting.

Despite its small size, P. signatus is a confident cave-spawner with strong pair bonds and dedicated parental care. The compact size makes it suitable for 60 L nano setups, and its modest territorial bubble means it can coexist with small, peaceful tankmates if caves and sightline breaks are provided.

Soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.5–7.0) matching Nigerian forest streams is recommended. The species does well in blackwater setups with leaf litter and tannin-stained water, which enhances both colour and breeding confidence.

Water: 24–27°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft (GH 1–8, KH 1–4); tannin-stained blackwater conditions encouraged. Tank: 60 L sufficient; provide small caves (terracotta pots, shells) and dense planting. Feeding: Small micro pellets, crushed flake, and fine live or frozen foods — baby brine shrimp, micro-worms, daphnia. Breeding: Cave-spawner; pair territorial within a small radius of cave — dither fish help reduce pair aggression. Compatibility: Ideal with small, peaceful nano species such as ember tetras, Boraras rasboras, or small Corydoras.
