Pelvicachromis sp. 'Lobe'
Also known as: Lobe River Krib, Lobe Krib (sp.)
Origin: Cameroon (Lobe River drainage)
Pelvicachromis sp. 'Lobe' is an undescribed species collected in the Lobe River drainage of coastal Cameroon, a region also known for the Lobe locale of P. taeniatus. This form is morphologically distinct — showing a deeper body profile and a more pronounced row of dark lateral spots compared to sympatric taeniatus populations, suggesting true species status awaiting formal description.
Behaviour is typical of the krib group: secretive cave-spawning, strong pair bonds, and active parental care of the fry once they become free-swimming. Males are colourful but somewhat shy until settled in a stable, well-decorated aquarium.
Soft, slightly acidic water replicating the shaded coastal forest streams of Cameroon suits this species well. An 80 L planted tank with leaf litter, bogwood, and coconut cave hides will encourage regular spawning.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft (GH 2–10, KH 1–5). Tank: 80 L with caves, leaf litter, and generous planting to provide seclusion. Feeding: Quality micro pellets and flake supplemented with frozen brine shrimp, bloodworm, and daphnia. Breeding: Cave-spawner forming tight pair bond; offer 2–3 cave options and low-flow areas for egg-laying. Compatibility: Peaceful with small schooling fish; avoid other cave-dwelling cichlid species.
