Pelvicachromis taeniatus 'Nigerian Red'
Also known as: Nigerian Red Krib, Nigerian Red Kribensis, Nigerian Red Taeniatus
Origin: Nigeria
Pelvicachromis taeniatus 'Nigerian Red' is a Nigerian locale form in which selective population-level colouration has produced males with an exceptionally red-flushed lower body and females whose violet-magenta belly is among the most vivid of any krib variant. It is a prized fish for dedicated West African cichlid enthusiasts.
Breeding behaviour mirrors other P. taeniatus forms — tight pair bonds, obligate cave-spawning, and zealous parental defence. Nigerian Red males tend to be particularly active in their courtship displays, frequently fanning fins and performing lateral threat displays to rival males or encroaching tankmates.
Soft, warm water at pH 5.5–7.0 is ideal. A dark substrate, bogwood furnishings, and broad-leafed plants replicate the shaded forest streams of Nigeria and bring out the best colouration in both sexes.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft (GH 2–10, KH 1–5); slightly acidic water intensifies colour. Tank: 80 L minimum; dark substrate and leaf litter deepen red pigmentation in males. Feeding: Micro pellets, quality flake, plus live or frozen brine shrimp, bloodworm, and daphnia at least 3×/week. Breeding: Cave-spawner; pair bond is strong — condition separately on live food before introducing to breeding tank. Compatibility: Best with active dither fish (neon tetras, Congo tetras); avoid slow-moving or long-finned tankmates.
