Betta pugnax
Also known as: Penang Betta, Forest Betta, Mouthbrooding Betta
Origin: Malaysia
Betta pugnax is a mouthbrooding wild Betta native to streams and forest pools of Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore. Despite its scientific name suggesting aggression, it is among the more peaceful wild bettas and can be kept in pairs or small groups in a spacious planted aquarium. Males carry eggs and fry in their mouths.
Water: temp 24–28°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft to moderately hard. Tank: minimum 80L; well-planted with hiding spots; tight lid essential. Feeding: carnivore — live and frozen invertebrates; may accept micro pellets over time. Behaviour: peaceful; males mouthbrood young; may bicker mildly between males. Compatibility: suitable with peaceful, similarly sized fish; avoid fin-nippers.
