Thayeria boehlkei, the Penguin Tetra, is native to the Amazon basin and is recognised by the unique black stripe that angles down through the lower lobe of its tail. This fish swims in a characteristic head-up posture, adding to its charm. It is hardy, adaptable, and forms tight schools that create a dynamic display in medium to large planted tanks.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to medium hardness. Tank: 80 L minimum; open mid-water swimming space with some plant cover. Feeding: Accepts flake, micro-pellets, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp. Behaviour: Active schooling fish with a characteristic head-up swimming posture; keep 8+. Compatibility: Good with similarly sized peaceful fish; avoid aggressive or very small species.
