Procambarus paeninsulanus
Also known as: Peninsula Crayfish, Florida Peninsula Crayfish
Origin: Florida, USA
Procambarus paeninsulanus is endemic to the Florida Peninsula, where it inhabits a range of freshwater habitats from clear springs to sluggish weedy ponds. It presents classic Procambarus body form with warm olive, brown, and tan colouration that blends naturally with a substrate of sand and leaf litter.
As a subtropical species, P. paeninsulanus tolerates a fairly wide temperature range but thrives in the 20–27°C band typical of Florida waters. It is an active burrower and a competent digger, so loose substrate and escape-proof tank lids are important. Like most Procambarus, it will excavate planting and needs robust or artificial alternatives.
This species appeals to keepers who enjoy building native Florida biotope aquaria with species that are not yet commonly represented in the hobby.
Water: 20–27°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 5–18, KH 2–12; Florida spring-quality moderately hard water ideal. Tank: minimum 80 L, sand or fine gravel for burrowing, PVC pipes, flat stones, tight lid. Feeding: omnivore — sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, detritus and leaf litter accepted. Breeding: female broods under pleopods; juveniles independent; can be raised in species tank. Compatibility: territorial — solo specimen or with fast robust upper-column fish.
