Corydoras paleatus
Also known as: Peppered Cory, Peppered Corydoras, Mottled Corydoras
Origin: La Plata River system — Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay

Corydoras paleatus is native to the La Plata River system in southeastern South America — including rivers and streams in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay — where it inhabits slow-moving, vegetated rivers and streams with sandy and muddy substrates, sometimes at considerably cooler temperatures than other corydoras species.
The body displays the characteristic corydoras pattern: mottled irregular dark and pale markings scattered across a silvery base, creating a 'peppered' appearance that gives the species its common name. The pattern varies between individuals. The body has the characteristic callichthyid bony scute armor and three pairs of sensory barbels.
C. paleatus was one of the first tropical fish successfully bred in captivity and has been in the aquarium hobby since the 1800s — making it one of the oldest cultivated ornamental fish species. Today, all specimens available in the trade are captive-bred, making them highly adaptable to a range of aquarium conditions.
The Peppered Cory is distinguished from most other corydoras by its significantly greater cold tolerance — wild populations inhabit temperate sub-tropical rivers where temperatures can drop below 15°C in winter. This makes them exceptional for unheated indoor tanks in temperate climates and outdoor pond use.
Peppered Corydoras are exceptionally adaptable: pH 6.0–7.5, hardness 5–20 dGH, and temperatures 15–24°C. Their cold tolerance is exceptional among corydoras — they prefer cooler temperatures than most tropical community fish and are stressed by sustained temperatures above 25°C. In warmer tanks, aeration is critical.
A minimum 60-liter aquarium with fine sand substrate suits a group of 6. Provide driftwood, smooth stones, and plant cover. Feed quality sinking pellets, algae wafers, and frozen or live bloodworms, tubifex, and daphnia. Feed in the evening when corydoras are most active.
Peppered Corydoras are entirely peaceful with all community species. Compatible with cold-tolerant fish: White Cloud Mountain Minnows, hillstream loaches, small danios, cool-water barbs, and cool-water tetras. Also compatible with standard tropical community fish if temperatures are kept in the overlap range (22–24°C).
Keep in groups of at least 6 for natural social behavior. Weekly water changes of 25–30% maintain water quality. A classic, reliable species for beginners.
