Crenicichla percna
Also known as: Percna Pike Cichlid, Dark Pike Cichlid, Xingu Black Pike Cichlid
Origin: Rio Xingu, Pará, Brazil
Crenicichla percna is one of the most dramatically coloured pike cichlids in the genus — and one of the rarest. Endemic to the Rio Xingu in Pará state, Brazil, it shares this extraordinary river system with several other highly sought Crenicichla. The species name percna means 'very dark' in Greek, referencing the almost uniformly dusky-black body colouration that contrasts vividly with the brilliant red-orange margins of the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins.
The Xingu is a warm, fast-flowing clear-water river with a unique and highly specialised fauna. C. percna is adapted to its warm, oxygenated, moderately soft-to-neutral conditions. Strong filtration with good oxygenation and some current in the tank is recommended. The species inhabits rocky areas of the river, and its aquarium should reflect this with substantial boulder formations and minimal fine substrate.
C. percna is rarely exported and commands premium prices when available. It is a strictly advanced fish requiring experienced hands, appropriate tank size, and a commitment to its specific water quality and husbandry needs. Captive breeding efforts are highly valued for this Xingu endemic.
Water: pH 5.5–7.0 at 26–30°C; moderately soft; high oxygenation and moderate current important. Tank: 220 L with large smooth boulders, minimal fine substrate, and strong filtration. Feeding: Frozen carnivore foods; live prey to develop fin colouration and breeding condition. Breeding: Cave spawner in rocky crevices; requires perfect conditions; rarely achieved. Compatibility: Species tank only; Xingu endemic — do not mix with incompatible species.
