Apistogramma personata
Origin: Brazil (Rio Purus)
Apistogramma personata is an uncommon dwarf cichlid from the Rio Purus and adjacent drainages in Brazil, identifiable by its distinctive mask-like dark facial pattern—hence the name 'personata' (meaning 'masked')—and rounded caudal fin with vivid red edging in breeding males. It inhabits leaf-litter zones of slow-moving blackwater streams and performs best in a tannin-rich biotope aquarium. A secretive cave spawner that rewards patient, detail-oriented keepers.
Provide deep blackwater conditions with leaf litter, coconut cave spawning sites, and tannin-stained water from Indian almond leaves or peat. Feed frozen and live invertebrates. Keep as a pair or harem. Females guard the cave clutch intensely—provide visual barriers to reduce male harassment.
