Tatia perugiae
Also known as: Perugia's Wood Catfish, Perugias Catfish
Origin: Amazon basin
Tatia perugiae is one of several small Tatia species in the auchenipterid family that are collectively known as wood catfish for their habit of resting immobile against submerged wood. It originates from Amazonian river tributaries and flooded forest habitats where leaf litter and woody debris are abundant.
Like all auchenipterids, Tatia perugiae employs internal fertilisation — males possess a modified anal fin used to transfer sperm to the female during a brief, rapid coupling. Females may store sperm for weeks before fertilising eggs, often laying them in protected spots among wood or leaves.
In the aquarium, this species is entirely peaceful, secretive, and easy to maintain. Its mottled brown colouration provides excellent camouflage against natural décor. It feeds readily on small sinking foods after dark and is entirely safe with all but the smallest tankmates.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard; clean water with leaf litter. Tank: Minimum 100L; driftwood, coconut caves, leaf litter; low to moderate lighting. Feeding: Omnivore; small sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, Tubifex; nocturnal feeder. Breeding: Internal fertiliser; captive breeding achieved in well-decorated tanks. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent with all but the very smallest nano fish.
