Hyphessobrycon peruvianus
Also known as: Peruvian Tetra
Origin: South America (Peruvian Amazon tributaries)
Hyphessobrycon peruvianus is a widespread and adaptable tetra found throughout the Peruvian Amazon and its tributaries. Its body is a soft silver with a delicate golden lateral stripe and pinkish translucent fins that catch the light attractively in a well-planted aquarium. Males develop more vivid colours and longer dorsal fin extensions during the breeding season.
This species is among the more accommodating of the Hyphessobrycon, tolerating a wider range of water parameters than many of its congeners. It is an excellent beginner-friendly option for aquarists interested in South American blackwater species, and its gentle disposition makes it a good community fish.
It accepts all standard aquarium foods readily and benefits from regular supplementation with frozen invertebrates to maintain colour and vitality.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft to medium (GH 2–15, KH 1–7). Tank: 60 L minimum; planted tank with open swimming area; adaptable to most setups. Feeding: Quality flake, micro-pellets, frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworm. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; condition with live foods; dense fine plants trigger spawning. Compatibility: Excellent community fish with virtually all similarly sized, peaceful species.
