Hyphessobrycon peruvianus
Also known as: Peruvian Tetra
Origin: Peru (Amazonian tributaries)
Hyphessobrycon peruvianus is a slender, modestly colored tetra from the Amazonian tributaries of Peru. Its elongated, pink-silver body carries a subtle caudal spot and a faint mid-lateral stripe. While not as boldly colored as some of its relatives, its quiet elegance and calm temperament make it a valued community fish for Peruvian biotope aquariums. Hardy and easy to maintain in soft, warm, slightly acidic conditions, it accepts a wide range of prepared foods and is among the simpler Hyphessobrycon species to keep. It breeds via egg-scattering and can be induced to spawn by the usual conditioning and soft water approach.
Water: pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 24–28 °C; soft, slightly acidic. Adaptable within this range. Tank: 50 L minimum; Peruvian biotope-style planted aquarium with dark substrate and gentle flow. Feeding: Omnivore; flake, micro-pellets, frozen daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and cyclops. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; standard approach with soft acidic water and fine plants. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent for Peruvian community tanks with dwarf cichlids, corydoras, and pencilfish.
