Petenia splendida
Also known as: Bay Snook, Bay Snook Cichlid, Tenguayaca
Origin: Mexico, Guatemala, Belize
Petenia splendida is one of the most anatomically specialized cichlids in Central America. Its jaw mechanism allows for extraordinary protrusion — when striking, the mouth can expand and extend to capture prey fish that appear too large to be swallowed. This specialization makes it one of the region's most effective ambush predators, often lurking among vegetation or submerged structure before striking.
Found in the Peten Lakes of Guatemala and adjacent lowlands in Mexico and Belize, P. splendida inhabits clear, vegetated waters with abundant prey fish. Adults can be silvery, golden, or develop a reddish morph (forma roja) that is particularly sought-after in the aquarium trade. All morphs show a distinctive elongated body profile and large, upward-angled mouth.
This is an advanced keeper's fish — its large adult size, specialized feeding requirements, and considerable aggression toward potential food items require an experienced hand and a very large, thoughtfully designed aquarium.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 5–18, KH 3–10; well-filtered, clear water preferred. Tank: 800 L minimum for adults; minimal decor, open water, flat rocks; avoid small tankmates entirely. Feeding: Carnivore — large pellets, whole fish (lance fish, smelt), prawn; strike-feed behavior accommodated by open tank design. Breeding: Open substrate spawner; large clutches; very aggressive pair defense; remove rivals completely. Compatibility: Species tank strongly recommended; will consume any fish it can fit in its mouth.
