Gnathonemus petersii
Also known as: Peter's Elephantnose Fish, Elephant Nose Fish, Long-nosed Elephantfish
Origin: Africa
Gnathonemus petersii is found throughout Central and West African river systems and belongs to the ancient Mormyridae family. It generates and processes weak electric pulses through a specialised electric organ and was the subject of major neuroscience research into intelligence and learning in non-mammalian vertebrates. It is sensitive to water quality and is best maintained as an individual or in small groups with careful monitoring.
Water: 23-28°C, pH 6.0-7.2, soft to slightly hard; nitrates must be kept very low. Tank: Minimum 150L, dense planting or driftwood, very subdued lighting, dark substrate. Feeding: Carnivore; live Tubifex worm essential for new arrivals; frozen bloodworm once settled. Behaviour: Shy and nocturnal; intraspecific aggression can occur — monitor carefully if kept in groups. Compatibility: Peaceful, robust tankmates; Congo tetras, large rasboras, peaceful synodontis catfish.
