Petrochromis polyodon
Also known as: Polyodon Petrochromis
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Petrochromis polyodon is the largest member of the Petrochromis genus and one of the most dominant algae-grazers on the rocky reefs of Lake Tanganyika. Its specialised comb-like teeth enable efficient algae scraping from rocky surfaces. Adult males develop vivid colouration and engage in intense lateral displays and jaw-locking contests. Best kept by experienced keepers in very large aquariums.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water; high oxygen levels required. Tank: 400L+; floor-to-ceiling rockwork; algae growth on rocks highly beneficial. Feeding: High-quality spirulina and vegetable-based flake and pellet; avoid protein-heavy foods strictly. Behaviour: Extremely aggressive among males; keep one male with 4+ females or large single-species group. Compatibility: Other large Petrochromis or Tropheus in very large systems only.
