Petrochromis trewavasae
Also known as: Trewavasae Petrochromis
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Petrochromis trewavasae is a large, robust algae-grazing cichlid from the rocky shores of Lake Tanganyika where it uses its brush-like teeth to scrape biofilm and algae from the rock surface. Males in breeding condition develop striking blue and yellow patterning. A schooling species requiring a group and large tank to distribute aggression effectively.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water; excellent filtration due to the messy herbivore diet. Tank: 300L+ for a group of 8-10; extensive rockwork covering the back and sides. Feeding: High-quality spirulina flake and vegetable pellet as staple; nori; avoid protein-heavy foods. Behaviour: Keep in groups; dominant males colourful and territorial; spread aggression with numbers. Compatibility: Tropheus species, Simochromis species; avoid small or slow fish.
