Petrotilapia sp. 'Small Blue'
Also known as: Small Blue Petrotilapia, Blue Petrotilapia
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
Petrotilapia sp. 'Small Blue' is an undescribed, smaller-bodied Petrotilapia form from Lake Malawi, reaching only around 12–13 cm — modest for a genus that regularly produces fish above 15 cm. Males display a clean, vivid electric-blue colouration with minimal dark barring. The smaller size makes this form more accessible to hobbyists with 200–250 L tanks compared to larger Petrotilapia species.
Despite the reduced body size, Small Blue retains the genus's tricuspid dentition and dependence on an algae-only diet — animal protein still carries significant Malawi bloat risk. Territorial aggression is proportionally similar to larger Petrotilapia, and harem management with one male to several females is still required. Female maternal mouthbrooding lasts approximately 21–28 days. A rewarding species for keepers who want the unique Petrotilapia biology in a slightly more manageable package.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.8–8.5, hard (GH 10–25, KH 6–15); consistent water changes and strong filtration required. Tank: 200 L minimum; rock structures with multiple crevices and cave territories; sandy open floor area. Feeding: Algae-only diet — spirulina flake and pellets, algae wafers; absolutely no bloodworm or similar animal protein. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; female holds 21–28 days; isolate during brooding for fry protection. Compatibility: Suitable for mbuna tanks with same-sized species; avoid very large or very small tankmates.
