About

Petrotilapia tridentiger is one of the most evolutionarily specialised mbuna species, possessing uniquely tricuspid (three-cusped) teeth specifically adapted for combing aufwuchs from rock surfaces with a raking motion. This tooth structure is diagnostic for the genus and represents one of the most derived feeding adaptations in the entire mbuna community. Males develop deep blue colouration with dark vertical barring.

One of the largest mbuna species, P. tridentiger can reach 18 cm and is a dominant presence in rocky Malawi habitats. It is found across much of Lake Malawi's rocky shoreline, with regional colour variants known from different localities. Its large size and feeding specialisation mean it requires a well-established aquarium with high-quality rockwork.

In the aquarium, Petrotilapia tridentiger is an advanced-level species due to its size, aggression, and dietary needs. A diet based almost entirely on aufwuchs and algae is essential — this species is extremely prone to Malawi Bloat if fed protein-heavy foods. Dedicated cichlid specialists who can meet its demands are rewarded with one of the most impressive mbuna in the hobby.

Care Guide

Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.8-8.5, hard alkaline; large filtration capacity needed for a large, active species. Tank: 400L minimum; large boulder aquascape with algae-covered surfaces ideal; avoid overcrowding. Feeding: Strict herbivore — spirulina pellets, algae wafers, blanched vegetables only; high protein is dangerous. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; large clutches; females need significant recovery time and space. Compatibility: Very aggressive large mbuna; advanced keepers only; house with other large aggressive species.
