Crenicichla phaiospilus
Also known as: Phaiospilus Pike Cichlid, Dusky-spot Pike Cichlid, Tapajós Golden Pike Cichlid
Origin: Rio Tapajós drainage, Pará, Brazil
Crenicichla phaiospilus is an attractively patterned mid-sized pike cichlid from the Rio Tapajós system, its name meaning 'dusky spot' in reference to the softly defined, grey-brown lateral markings distributed along the flanks. These spots contrast pleasantly against the warm golden-olive base colouration of well-maintained adults, creating a subtle but refined appearance.
As a Tapajós species, C. phaiospilus is adapted to the clear, warm, moderately soft waters of this Amazonian tributary. In the aquarium, soft to slightly hard water at 24–28°C is appropriate. The species appreciates a naturalistic setup with sandy areas, driftwood, and smooth stones providing both shelter and spawning substrates.
At 22 cm C. phaiospilus is a manageable mid-large predator for a 220 L dedicated setup. It is a reliable feeder that accepts frozen carnivore foods and quality cichlid pellets without difficulty. Breeding follows the standard Crenicichla cave-spawning protocol, with biparental care of eggs and free-swimming fry.
Water: Soft to slightly hard (pH 5.5–7.0) at 24–28°C; good filtration and water quality. Tank: 220 L with sandy substrate, driftwood, and smooth rock caves. Feeding: Frozen prawn, bloodworm, mussel, earthworm; quality cichlid pellets accepted. Breeding: Cave spawner with biparental care; condition with live/frozen variety diet. Compatibility: Species pair; large robust dither fish possible in very spacious tanks.
