Phenacogrammus aurantiacus
Also known as: Orange Congo Tetra, Aurantiacus Tetra
Origin: Congo Basin, Central Africa
Phenacogrammus aurantiacus is a rarely encountered close relative of the celebrated Congo Tetra, originating from the same Congo River basin. Males display an intense golden-orange body flush with shimmering iridescence that differs from the more blue-and-purple tones of P. interruptus, and they develop similar flowing fin extensions with maturity. This makes them a distinct and complementary species for dedicated African biotope displays.
Care requirements are essentially identical to P. interruptus: soft to moderately soft water, gentle flow, a dark substrate, and groups of ten or more for best display. Competition between closely related Phenacogrammus males in the same tank can be lively but rarely results in injury, and the resulting display behaviour is spectacular.
Phenacogrammus aurantiacus feeds readily on high-quality flake, micro-pellets, and frozen invertebrates. Its rarity in the hobby means that when available it commands a premium price, but the species is entirely straightforward to maintain and well within the capability of any intermediate aquarist.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.2, temperature 23–27°C, GH 2–12, KH 1–6. Tank: Minimum 150 L, open mid-water, dark substrate, planted perimeter for security. Feeding: Omnivore; high-quality flake, micro-pellets, frozen brine shrimp, bloodworm, and spirulina. Breeding: Egg scatterer; soft acidic water; fine plants or mop used as spawning substrate. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent with other Congo tetras and Synodontis catfish.
