Phenacogrammus interruptus
Also known as: Congo Tetra, Congo Characin
Origin: Congo River Basin, DRC
Phenacogrammus interruptus, the Congo Tetra, is widely regarded as the most spectacular African characin available in the hobby. Endemic to the Congo River basin of the Democratic Republic of Congo, males develop extraordinary iridescent colouration spanning blue, gold, orange, and purple, with dramatically extended dorsal and caudal fin filaments that flow elegantly in gentle current.
This species thrives in soft, slightly acidic water with gentle flow and a dark substrate that enhances colour by contrast. Subdued or plant-filtered lighting brings out the full iridescence of the scales. Groups of ten or more, ideally with a higher ratio of males, produce the most compelling visual display as males spar and display to one another.
Congo Tetras readily accept most aquarium foods and are robust and forgiving of minor water quality fluctuations once established. They are one of the best entry points into African fish-keeping and a perennial favourite in planted community aquariums.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 23–27°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–8. Tank: Minimum 150 L with open mid-water, planted sides, and a dark substrate to enhance colour. Feeding: Omnivore; high-quality flake, micro-pellets, frozen brine shrimp, bloodworm, and spirulina flake. Breeding: Egg scatterer; soft acidic water and fine plants encourage spawning; fry free-swimming within 5 days. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent with other African tetras, Synodontis catfish, and Congo dwarf cichlids.
