Tetraodon cf. biocellatus
Also known as: Philippine Figure-8 Puffer, Philippine Puffer
Origin: Philippines (coastal and estuarine rivers)
Tetraodon cf. biocellatus from the Philippines represents a locally distinct population of the Figure-8 Puffer with slightly sharper contrast between the dark figure-8 dorsal pattern and the pale background. Philippine populations are sometimes imported separately in the specialist trade and exhibit the same brackish water requirements and manageable temperament as the mainland form.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, SG 1.005–1.010; low-end brackish conditions required for long-term health. Tank: Minimum 80 L; hardy planted setup with Java fern and open sandy areas for foraging. Feeding: Ramshorn snails, mussels, bloodworm, and brine shrimp to maintain beak health. Behaviour: Curious and interactive; will fin-nip tankmates — observe carefully and separate if needed. Compatibility: Best species-only; cautious pairing with fast brackish species possible in large tanks.
