Parosphromenus phoenicurus
Also known as: Red-tailed Licorice Gourami, Phoenicurus Licorice Gourami
Origin: Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo
Parosphromenus phoenicurus, the red-tailed licorice gourami, is one of the most visually breathtaking of all Parosphromenus species. Its name, meaning 'red-tailed', describes the brilliant fire-red caudal fin that contrasts dramatically with the deep blue iridescent body in full-colour males. It originates from lowland blackwater streams in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo.
Like all licorice gouramis, P. phoenicurus is a cave spawner requiring soft, acidic blackwater conditions. It is a small, delicate species that should never be kept with competitive or boisterous fish. Only experienced blackwater keepers should attempt to maintain this species, as water parameter stability is paramount.
The species is listed as Endangered due to extensive deforestation in its Sarawakian range. Captive-bred specimens are available through specialist dealers and Parosphromenus Project connections. Successfully breeding and raising young significantly contributes to the survival of this threatened species.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 4.0–6.5, very soft (GH 0–5) — tannins from botanicals help replicate Borneo blackwater. Tank: 30 L nano species biotope with caves, driftwood, and leaf litter; sponge filtration only. Feeding: micro live foods are essential; daphnia, cyclops, and white worm as conditioning food. Breeding: cave spawner; male guards eggs and fans fry for ~12 days before fry become free-swimming. Compatibility: species-only; will be outcompeted or ignored to death in any community setting.
