Apistogramma piauiensis
Also known as: Piaui Apisto, Piauiensis Apistogramma
Origin: South America
Apistogramma piauiensis hails from the river systems of Piaui state in northeastern Brazil, where water conditions are somewhat harder and more varied than in the central Amazon. This has given it a degree of hardiness not seen in most Apistogramma, making it accessible to intermediate-level hobbyists. Males display attractive lateral banding and colourful finnage.
Water: 23-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 4-12) tolerated. Tank: 60L minimum, sand substrate, caves, moderate planting. Feeding: omnivore — varied live/frozen and quality dry foods. Behaviour: territorial during breeding; harem setup (1M:2-3F) recommended. Compatibility: peaceful community with small tetras and Corydoras.
