Apistogramma piauiensis
Also known as: Piaui Apisto, Piauiensis Dwarf Cichlid, Northeastern Apistogramma
Origin: Brazil
Apistogramma piauiensis is an unusual species within the genus due to its northeastern Brazilian origin — the Parnaíba River basin of Piauí state — a region with seasonally fluctuating water chemistry that is quite different from the stable Amazonian blackwater environments most apistos call home. This geographic origin grants the species significantly greater tolerance for higher pH and temperature than typical Apistogramma.
Males display attractive markings with a bold lateral stripe, red-orange fin accents, and iridescent blue-green scale rows that intensify during breeding. The species is moderately sized and active, making it a good display fish for a dedicated South American biotope.
Its broader water parameter tolerance makes A. piauiensis an accessible choice for hobbyists in regions where soft water is difficult to achieve.
Water: Moderate — pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–28°C; tolerates harder water than most apistos. Tank: 60 L with caves, sandy substrate, and plant coverage. Feeding: Varied diet: pellets, frozen Artemia, bloodworm, Daphnia. Breeding: Cave spawner; female guards fry; relatively straightforward. Compatibility: Small peaceful South American community fish.
