Melanotaenia pictus
Also known as: Pictus Rainbowfish, Painted Rainbowfish
Origin: Indonesia (West Papua)
Melanotaenia pictus is a beautifully patterned species from West Papua, Indonesia, distinguished by an intricate scale-edge colouration that creates a mosaic of blue, green, and gold across the body. This lattice-like pattern is particularly vivid in dominant males, where the unpaired fins also display bold orange-red accents. The species has a relatively deep body for its size, and mature males develop a slight dorsal hump.
This species is seldom available in general retail and is considered a specialist's fish, appreciated by rainbowfish enthusiasts for its unusual patterning. It requires clean, soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water and does not tolerate poor water quality well. Regular substantial water changes and efficient filtration are essential. It is best displayed in a species tank or with other calm West Papuan rainbowfish.
Melanotaenia pictus can be bred in a standard rainbowfish fashion using fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. Fry are moderately small and should be raised on infusoria before transitioning to brine shrimp nauplii and powder foods.
Water: pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 23–28°C, soft to moderately hard; pristine water quality required. Tank: Minimum 120 L; well-filtered planted tank with open swimming space; gentle to moderate flow. Feeding: Fine flake and micro-pellets; live and frozen small invertebrates regularly for best patterning. Breeding: Egg scatterer on fine plants; fry require infusoria initially then brine shrimp nauplii. Compatibility: Best with calm, similarly sized species; avoid boisterous or nippy tankmates.
