Nothobranchius pienaari
Origin: Mozambique
Nothobranchius pienaari is a seldom-encountered annual killifish from Mozambique, with males displaying striking red and yellow-orange body coloration accented by a bold dark tail band. As an annual species, it completes its entire life cycle in temporary seasonal pools, requiring a dry-incubation period in slightly moist peat for egg development—an essential aspect of its breeding. A true collector's fish for experienced killifish keepers seeking something unusual and biologically fascinating.
Keep as a pair or small group (1 male, 2–3 females) in a small, densely planted aquarium. Provide peat substrate for spawning. Collect eggs from peat after 2–3 months and dry-incubate in slightly moist peat at room temperature for 3–4 months before rewetting. Feed small live and frozen foods.
