Nothobranchius pienaari
Also known as: Pienaar's Nothobranch, Pienaar's Killifish
Origin: Limpopo, South Africa
Nothobranchius pienaari is one of the southernmost Nothobranchius, found in seasonal pools in the Limpopo lowveld of South Africa. Males display vibrant orange-red bodies with iridescent blue scale edging. Its cooler habitat preferences and restricted range make it less commonly encountered in trade, and it is best kept by experienced annual killifish keepers.
Water: 18–24 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft water preferred. Tank: 30 L cool species tank; peat substrate for spawning; tight lid required. Feeding: Live and frozen small invertebrates; micro-pellets supplementally. Behaviour: Males territorial; keep one male with two females. Compatibility: Species tank only; cooler temperature needs limit tankmate options.
