Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Pigeon Blood Discus, PB Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Southeast Asian hatcheries)
The Pigeon Blood Discus is one of the most commercially significant strains ever developed, originating from Thai breeders in the 1990s. The distinctive orange-red body scattered with black pepper spots is caused by a genetic mutation affecting melanophore distribution, resulting in a pattern unlike any other cichlid.
This strain demands the same high water quality as all discus but can tolerate marginally harder water than some wild-type variants. Its bold colouration is diet-dependent — foods rich in astaxanthin and spirulina help maintain the vivid orange-red tones that define a quality specimen.
Pigeon Bloods are active and sociable within a group. They pair readily and are among the more prolific breeders in the hobby, making them an excellent starting point for hobbyists interested in discus breeding.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft to moderately hard (1-10 dGH), KH 0-5. Tank: Minimum 250 L, smooth surfaces for spawning, gentle filtration to avoid fin damage. Feeding: Colour-enhancing discus pellets, frozen bloodworm, beefheart, brine shrimp enriched with spirulina. Breeding: Prolific open spawner; slate or broad plant leaves used; both parents tend eggs and fry. Compatibility: Best with other discus; compatible with peaceful tetras and non-nippy Corydoras.
