Acestrorhynchus falcirostris
Also known as: Pike Characin Falcirostris, Spotted Pike Characin, Large Pike Characin
Origin: Amazon basin, South America
Acestrorhynchus falcirostris is the largest and most formidable of the pike characins, reaching up to 40 cm and representing a true apex predator within its ecological guild. Found across the Amazon basin, it is an open-water, schooling predator that pursues schools of small tetras and other characins with explosive bursts of speed. Its long, pointed beak, torpedo body, and vivid red-orange spots at the base of the caudal fin make it instantly recognisable.
In the aquarium, Acestrorhynchus falcirostris requires very large tanks — 1000 litres minimum — with exceptional filtration, very high oxygenation, and strong, directional water flow. It is a fast, powerful fish that will stress in cramped conditions and is sensitive to water quality issues. All tankmates small enough to be consumed will be eaten; this species must be housed with very large fish or as a solo specimen.
Feeding initially requires live fish but A. falcirostris can be weaned onto dead fish and eventually high-quality large carnivore pellets through consistent training. Its striking appearance — combining the pointed predatory build with vivid fin markings — makes it the most spectacular member of its genus for display in specialist large South American fish aquariums.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 5.5–7.5, 24–28°C; maximum oxygenation; strong flow. Tank: 1000 L minimum; open water; secure lid; minimal hardscape. Feeding: Piscivore — live fish first; wean to fresh fish and large carnivore pellets. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Apex piscivore; solo or very large tankmates only.
