Esox lucius
Origin: Europe (widespread in rivers and lakes)
The Northern Pike (Esox lucius) is the definitive apex predator of European freshwater ecosystems, displaying an elongated, torpedo-shaped body with intricate green-yellow camouflage patterning. Small display specimens are sold for large feature ponds and conservation projects where their presence helps maintain natural fish population balances. Requires a vast, well-filtered pond with a fine gravel or sandy substrate and open swimming areas. Absolutely not suitable for mixed ornamental pond keeping — it will consume any fish it can swallow.
Minimum 10,000 L well-filtered pond. Water temperature 4–22°C, pH 6.5–8.0. High water quality essential; sensitive to ammonia. Feed sinking predator pellets or fresh/frozen fish as juveniles. Provide plenty of aquatic vegetation for cover. Not suitable with any ornamental fish; pond must be species-only or with very large carp impossible to swallow.
