Geophagus pindare
Also known as: Pindare Eartheater, Mearim Eartheater
Origin: Brazil (Pindaré, Mearim rivers)
Geophagus pindare is native to the Pindaré and Mearim river systems of Maranhão state, north-eastern Brazil. These coastal drainages are geographically isolated from the Amazon proper, and the species shows adaptations to the clear, warm, softwater conditions typical of the region. At maturity, males develop elongated dorsal and ventral fin rays and vivid iridescent scale rows across the flanks. As a sand-sifting mouthbrooder it forms loose groups in the wild. In captivity it appreciates a spacious aquarium with a deep fine-sand base, scattered driftwood, and limited planting. It pairs well with other Geophagus species from adjacent river systems. Stable, slightly acidic water chemistry is key to maintaining full colour and health.
Water: Soft; pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 24–28 °C, low nitrates. Tank: 200 L+; 5 cm fine sand, driftwood, sparse planting. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, artemia, and daphnia. Breeding: Delayed mouthbrooder; loose group spawning in captivity. Compatibility: Good with large tetras, peaceful cichlids, and calm Corydoras relatives.
