Geophagus sp. 'Pindare'
Also known as: Pindare Orange Head, Pindare Eartheater
Origin: Brazil (Pindaré basin, Maranhão)
Geophagus sp. 'Pindare' represents a regionally distinct, undescribed population from the Pindaré river drainage of Maranhão, Brazil, characterised by an orange-to-amber suffusion across the head and nape. This colouration is at its most intense in dominant breeding males and provides a warm contrast with the silvery-green body scales. Like all Geophagus it is a continuous sand sifter and delayed mouthbrooder. The Pindaré drains through lowland forests and savannah zones, producing moderately soft, warm waters. In captivity, fine sand of at least 5 cm depth, moderate water movement, and occasional dried leaf addition simulate natural conditions. Group housing of five or more individuals brings out the best social and colour displays. Compatible with calm, large South American tetras.
Water: Soft; pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 24–28 °C. Tank: 200 L+; fine sand, driftwood, leaf litter, moderate flow. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, cyclops, and artemia. Breeding: Delayed mouthbrooder; loose group spawning; stable water critical. Compatibility: Peaceful with large tetras, other eartheaters, and bottom-dwelling catfish.
