Xiphophorus hellerii var.
Also known as: Pineapple Swordtail, Yellow Swordtail
Origin: Captive bred (originally Mexico and Central America)
The Pineapple Swordtail is a captive variety of Xiphophorus hellerii in which the body colour has been selectively developed into a warm golden-yellow to orange-yellow tone reminiscent of fresh pineapple. The sword retains the golden hue with a characteristic black dorsal border.
This variety is slightly less common than the red or green forms, making it a refreshing alternative for aquarists wanting swordtail energy and hardiness in a warm-toned colour palette. Males are active and bold, regularly displaying their swords to females and each other.
Pineapple Swordtails are fully compatible with other swordtail varieties, platies, and most community fish, though males should be monitored for aggression toward each other.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard water; stable temperature important. Tank: 100 L minimum; tall plants along edges provide visual breaks for males. Feeding: Varied omnivore diet; carotenoid foods maintain the golden-yellow colouration. Breeding: Prolific; fry develop colour within 6–8 weeks. Compatibility: Peaceful toward other fish; one male per group unless tank is large.
