Amatitlania nigrofasciata
Also known as: Pink Convict, White Convict, Leucistic Convict
Origin: Captive bred (Central America)
The Pink Convict arises from a recessive leucistic mutation in Amatitlania nigrofasciata that eliminates most of the dark melanin pigmentation. The result is a fish with a pale pink-white body on which the black vertical banding is absent or reduced to faint grey bars. Females often display orange ventral colouration, which appears particularly vivid against the pale base colour.
Despite its gentle appearance, the Pink Convict retains all the aggressive drive of the standard form. It is an extremely hardy, easy-to-breed species that is highly protective of its eggs and fry. The combination of leucistic colouration with the Convict's bold personality and easy care makes the Pink Convict a popular choice for beginner cichlid keepers.
Pink Convicts breed readily in captivity and will spawn in almost any aquarium with appropriate cave or crevice structures. Their parental care behaviour is remarkable and provides an excellent introduction to cichlid breeding for new enthusiasts.
Water: 20–28°C, pH 6.5–8.0; extremely hardy and adaptable; tolerates a wide range of water conditions. Tank: 120L minimum; provide cave hiding spots (flowerpot, coconut shell, or rock structure) for breeding. Feeding: Omnivore; accepts virtually any food including flakes, pellets, frozen, and live foods. Breeding: Very easy to breed; pairs spawn frequently; both parents guard eggs and fry aggressively. Compatibility: Aggressive when breeding; single pairs best; avoid mixing with very docile or small species.
