Helostoma temminkii
Also known as: Pink Kissing Gourami, Kissing Gourami
Origin: Southeast Asia
The Pink Kissing Gourami is the most widely kept form of Helostoma temminkii, an osphronemid native to Java and Thailand with a uniquely adapted rasping mouth used to feed on algae. The kissing behaviour observed between individuals is believed to be a form of dominance sparring rather than courtship. It grows large and requires a spacious aquarium.
Water: temp 22–28°C, pH 6.0–8.0, adaptable to a wide hardness range. Tank: minimum 200L; provide robust plants as it will graze on soft vegetation. Feeding: omnivore — algae wafers, spirulina flakes, pellets, live and frozen invertebrates. Behaviour: semi-aggressive; will spar via lip-pressing; generally peaceful with dissimilar species. Compatibility: suitable for large community tanks with robust similarly sized fish.
